Making A Murderer: Social Hub is an application that allows spoiler free engagement in series related online discussion.
In this quick group project we developed an initial concept for a social companion application on mobile for a plot-driven television series.
The application was inspired by the frustrating experience of trying to combine multi-platform social discussion around a series with irregular viewing hours, and still not having one’s viewing experience ruined by getting spoiled.
The application is specifically designed to accompany on demand streaming services. We decided to build our proof of concept around the streaming service Netflix, and their series Making a Murderer, although the application would suit any service and plot driven series. We chose our series because Making a Murderer both induced a massive global social response online, and managed to also attract older viewers, expanding the demographic.
Thus our initial goal was to develop a spoiler-free, yet fully featured and adaptable social experience under one application to allow for easy integration and connectivity.
Our additional goal was to optimise the application’s interface to also suit older, middle aged viewers, who are the most recent age group to engage in discussions on various social media platforms.
The application revolves around two major social features: The global social media feed which is filtered for spoilers, and the in app group discussions. The social platform provides an easy to use friend & follower control, content rating and customised filtering, in addition to notifications and an interface familiar from existing social media applications.
Each user’s application is synchronised with their Netflix account, following their progression in the series. The spoiler filtering system is based on this progression – the information is used to limit the content shown to the user by only displaying posts which have been written by people before or during the same phase or episode in the series. Along with that time stamp, the content is also filtered by human resources and by the users themselves by flagging posts – essentially the same way as filtering offensive content from social media.
Alongside the social platforms, the app features a comprehensive plot summary and character bio that also update based on the user’s progression when watching the series.
The Group Discussion allows for chat based conversations with friends and acquaintances without having to switch between different applications, and also provides a common platform for global conversations, connecting fans from all over the world for casual talk.
